This is the film adaptation of Walter Mosley's novel about a Black man, Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins" (Denzel Washington), who takes on the job of amateur detective after losing his job in Los Angeles during the late 1940s. De Witt Albright (Tom Sizemore) offers "Easy" money to find a White woman, Daphne Monet (Jennifer Beals), who was engaged to mayoral candidate Todd Carter (Terry Kinney). As he searches for Daphne, "Easy" finds himself not only in a racist world but surrounded by blackmail and murder as well and must rely on help from his friend Mouse (Don Cheadle) to find Daphne and, finally, to even save his own life.
