This is a good TV adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's famous novel about the four March sisters–Meg (Meredith Baxter), Jo (Susan Dey), Amy (Ann Dusenberry), and Beth (Eve Plumb)–growing up in the Civil War era. Dorothy McGuire and Greer Garson are particularly good in their roles as Marmee and Aunt Katherine March.

Art Long (Dennis Quaid) wants to be a Country-Western singer but just can't make it in that field. He then enters the world of amateur boxing and does well in the "Tough Man" competition. Hoping to make ends meet at home, Art now dedicates himself to boxing. His wife Caroline (Carlene Watkins) and parents (Wilford Brimley and Fran Ryan) support him, and his manager (Warren Oates) promotes Art all the way to the nationals. Along the way, Art makes friends with P.T. Coolidge (Stan Shaw) and Myra (Pam Grier), but enemies abound in the ring.
