  It is opening night of a new Broadway show when detective Sadie Evans (Gail Patrick) is found murdered, and soon after Rita Ross (Gertrude Michael) is also killed. The show's stage manager Jack Ellery (Jack Oakie) calls his friend, police Lt. Bill Burdock (Victor McLaglen), to investigate. The show continues, and Murdock–between musical numbers–works to find the murderer before the end of the show. Songs include "Marijuana," "Where Do They Come from Now," and "Cocktails for Two."

  Boxer Bob Corby (Ian Hunter) hires Jack Sander (Carl Brisson) as his sparring partner because he is in love with Jack's wife (Lillian Hall Davies) and wants to be close to her. Soon, Bob and Jack's wife run away together, and Jack begins training in earnest. Now, the two competing boxers vie not only for TKOs in the ring but also for the love of the same woman. Hitchcock's genius brings this standard story to a higher level.
