The man Absalon killed was the son of a wealthy farmer, James Jarvis (Charles Carson). Absalom's own father is a priest, Stephen Kumalo (Canada Lee), who, with help from a young priest, Rev. Maimangu (Sidney Poitier), comes looking for his son and finds that he is now a criminal. Through the fathers of the two men, both of whom have lost their sons, hope is seen for an end to apartheid.
