After being dumped by his girlfriend Gina (Alona Tal) because he is so boring, high-school senior Kevin Brewer (Drake Bell) heads off with his geek friend Morris Hooper (Kevin Covais) and obnoxious pal Carter Scott (Andrew Caldwell) for a scholarship interview at Fairmont University. The guys stay at the struggling fraternity Beta Phi Theta house, which is on probation. Teague (Nick Zano) leads his fraternity brothers in hazing their guests. It works–for a short time–until Kevin, Carter, and Morris figure out a plan to get revenge, and win the game.

English Professor Lawrence Wetherhold (Dennis Quaid) is widowed and raising his 17-year-old daughter Vanessa (Ellen Page). His grown son James (Ashton Holmes) drops by from time to time, and both James and Vanessa present him with more than a few problems. One day, Lawrence's brother Chuck (Thomas Haden Church) appears at the door in need of a home. As if he did not have enough problems, Lawrence suffers a brain injury, and the very unreliable Chuck offers to be his chauffeur. While in the emergency room, Lawrence encounters Dr. Janet Hartigan (Sarah Jessica Parker) who is a former student of his, and it appears that Janet is about to change forever the direction of his self-absorbed life.
