It is a tough winter in Kansas for the Witting family, and the flu season hits hard. Sarah (Glenn Close) and her husband Jacob (Christopher Walken) are surviving with their children Anna (Lexi Randall), Caleb (Christopher Bell), and Cassie (Emily Osment) when a strange man appears at their door. The man is John (Jack Palance), Jacob's father, who had abandoned the family when Jacob was a young boy. His arrival causes distress in the family, but they try to work through problems to make John a member of the family.
