Classic Greek Tragedy At Its FinestEleni 05/28/2007
Being Greek American, I was able to understand the language so noticed some of the translation errors but, not everything translates from one language to another.
Irene Pappas is at her best, since this is her arena - Greek tragedy. The young actress who played Antigone (AhnteeGOHnee) was fabulous - frail, afraid but stoic when she learns her fate.

This is one of many versions of this classic tale, and I like it the best - maybe it's because it deals with Helen (Eleni) of Troy. However, the above description of this movie is erroneous. Antigone does not hang herself - her father promised the priests she would be sacrificed to the gods by being thrown into a steaming crater, to entice the Gods to bring the wind so his ships can sail to rescue her aunt, Helen.

She is soon to be married to her love and makes an impassioned plea to her father - reminding him that she was the first to call him father. The priests becomt impatient but she staves them off and, honorably, puts on her wedding gown and crown and walks on her own to the crater. Just as the wind begins to pick up, her father calls out to her to stop and tries to reach her through the dust from the wind, but the priests push her into the crater.
