  Kyle-Lee (Duane Martin) is a high-school basketball star who leaves his team and joins a squad sponsored by drug dealer Birdie (Tupac Shakur). Birdie has an older brother, Shep (Leon), who begins dating Kyle's mother Mailika (Tonya Pinkins), and this upsets Kyle. Kyle begins spending time with hoodlums Moe (Byron Minns) and Bug (Marlon Wayans) and, after violence ensues, is faced with a dilemma: take the easy way out with crime or struggle to make it honestly on his own.

  After a failed assassination attempt on his life, South Boston mobster Bobby "Bats" Batton (Tom Sizemore) applies for the Federal Witness Relocation Program. This means that he, his wife Cindy (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), and children Sean and Suzie (Shawn Hatosy and Skye McCole Bartusiak) must assume new identities and move to Seattle. They realize very quickly that those things are easier said than done.
