Jule, Peter, and Jan (Julia Jentsch, Stipe Erceg, and Daniel Bruhl) spend their free evenings breaking into houses where they do not steal but rearrange furniture instead. The game works–until a resident (Burghart Klaubner) returns home. The trio kidnaps him and takes him to a secluded cabin where they learn that he has a past of his own, and they may not be prepared to handle his tricks of the trade.

In 1989, East German teen Alexander (Daniel Bruhl) protests against the GDR. When he is arrested, his mother (Katrin Sab) suffers a heart attack and goes into a coma. By the time she awakens, the Berlin Wall has been torn down. To prevent another heart attack, Alexander sets up a charade pretending their world has not changed by hiding all evidence of capitalism in their midst.
