Astronauts land on a newly discovered planet where apes rule, and humans are their servants. The astronauts learn that the apes can walk upright and talk and are far more sophisticated that the humans. When the leader of the apes, Dr. Zaius (Maurice Evans), learns that Taylor can also talk, he orders him killed. Now, two apes–scientist Cornelius (Roddy McDowell) and Dr. Zira (Kim Hunter)–help Taylor escape and, in the process, Taylor uncovers the secret of the planet.

A mixed-blood Indian rodeo champ, Joe Lightcloud (Elvis Presley), convinces a congressman to give him assistance in the form of a bull and twenty heifers so that he can build a herd. Then, Joe throws a party for his Navajo friends, and the bull, instead of a heifer, is slaughtered and barbequed. Joe does manage to get another bull, but that just leads to more problems. By story's end, Joe has romanced Mamie (Quentin Dean) and even manages to borrow a rodeo bull, win a big stake, and invest in a new herd. Along the way, Joe sings "Dominick," "Stay Away, Joe," "Lovely Mamie," and "All I Needed Was the Rain."
