  Danny O'Mara (William Bendix) owns a speakeasy in New York City during the early 1920s and is raising money to put on a Broadway show. Meanwhile, Ken falls for singer Bonnie Watson (Vivian Blaine) who is the speakeasy's star performer. By story's end, all comes together, and the result is a great show. Songs include "This is Our Lucky Day," When You Wore a Tulip," and "I'm Just Wild about Harry."

Meanwhile, Nathan tries to fend off Miss Adelaide (Vivian Blaine) who wants him to marry her. Songs include "Luck Be a Lady" and "Sit Down, You're rocking the Boat." The film received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Cinematography.

Growing up in a tenement existence, Francie wants a better life but struggles just to survive. A tree that survives the seasons is visible from their tenement and is her family's symbol of survival. This film is the first directorial effort of Elia Kazan. Dunn won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and Garner was presented an Honorary Oscar as Outstanding Child Actress.
