"The Commitments" is a band made up of working-class Dubliners that was formed by an ambitious young Dubliner to bring soul music to the area. The film is filled with great 1960s'-like music. This movie was adapted from a Roddy Doyle novel, which was the first of his "Barrytown" trilogy. The other two novels, which continue slices of life of working-class Dubliners, are "The Snapper" and "The Van," which were also made into movies.

Harvey arrives in France only to learn that Susan has chosen her stepfather Brian (James Brolin) to escort her down the aisle. Harvey leaves for the airport. He misses his flight, calls Marvin, and is told that he is fired. While consoling himself at the airport bar, Harvey meets Kate (Emma Thompson) who has her own problems but consoles Harvey, and he returns for the wedding reception where he offers a compassionate toast.
