He reexamines his life and the relationship he has with his abusive father Glen (James Coburn). Meanwhile, his ex-wife (Mary Beth Hurt) hates him, and his relationship with his daughter Jill (Brigid Tierney) is badly in need of repair. Wade is dating Margie (Sissy Spacek) who is the only one he seems capable of relating to. After his mother dies, Wade's brother Rolfe (Willem Dafoe) comes home to pay his respects, and now Wade suspects Rolfe of being involved in the criminal world. James Coburn won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and Nick Nolte was nominated for Best Actor.
