Thomas Hardy's novel is brought to the screen with Julie Christie as Bathsheba Everdine, the country girl, whose life touches three men: sheep farmer Gabriel (Alan Bates), wealthy William (Peter Finch), and reckless sergeant Troy (Terence Stamp). It is mid-19th-century Victorian England, and Bathsheba has just inherited the family farm.
