Now, Rick is encouraged by scientist Holly Cantrell (Anna Friel), and he finishes building his time-travel device. Fireworks salesman Will Stanton (Danny McBride) leads Rick and Holly to a cave where they test the machine and find themselves in a parallel universe. They lose their time-travel machine, and, with help from their monkey-like guide Chaka (Jorma Taccone), they begin their search through a vast, unknown world where they must contend with dinosaurs, giant mosquitoes, and other creepy creatures in their attempt to find the machine.

Aliens from the planet Nil embark on a mission to drain Earth's oceans in order to use the salt for an alternative fuel source. The inch-tall Nilians arrive at the Statue of Liberty aboard their human-shaped spacecraft "Dave" (Eddie Murphy) on which the captain (also Murphy) operates from the ship's bridge–between "Dave's" eyes. Months earlier, the Nilians had sent an orb to suck up Earth's water, but it went astray and ended up in 5th-grader Josh's (Austyn Myers) bedroom. Now, "Dave"–controlled by the captain and crew–works its way across New York City where "Dave" meets Josh in an attempt to regain the orb. "Dave" meets and befriends Josh's widowed mother Gina (Elizabeth Banks), and then problems develop when it is learned that "Dave's" energy supply is damaged, and the mission must be performed during the next 48 hours while the ship still has enough energy to take off.
