  In this story about U.S./Soviet Cold War relationships, United States Navy Captain Eric Finlander (Richard Widmark) becomes obsessed with the mission of his destroyer to seek out Soviet submarines. Assigned to do an article on Finlander, reporter Ben Munceford (Sidney Poitier) is aboard the destroyer and is documenting events taking place. During a cat-and-mouse game involving a Soviet submarine that is patrolling the same area, tensions rise, and one of Finlander's young officers, Ensign Ralston (James MacArthur), accidentally fires a nuclear weapon, which results in tragedy.
