Middle-aged Mary Horton (Piper Laurie) hires 24-year-old, retarded Tim Melville (Mel Gibson) as her gardener. After his mother dies, Mary takes Tim under her wing and becomes his surrogate mother in a relationship that deepens into romantic love. She teaches him to read and then invites him to visit her beach home as their relationship grows. Now, members of Tim's family–including his sister Dawn (Deborah Kennedy) and father Ron (Alwyn Kurts)–each deal with the situation in their own unique ways.
