Walter (Ray Liotta) has an argument with his wife Deborah (Glenne Headly) after he confesses to an affair with his office assistant (Kira Clavell). Deborah kicks Walter out of the house, and he moves in next door with high-school football player Skylar (Shaun Sipos) whose parents are out of town. Although both have their share of problems (they got together while sharing the same jail cell after a drinking binge), their dependence on each other allows Walt to have a place to live and Skylar to gain a guardian until his parents return.

The dogs must survive alone over a six-month period while Jerry Shepherd fails in his attempts to rescue them. Survive they do, and their adventures provide good entertainment.
