  Lon Chaney achieved stardom in this film as Notre Dame Cathedral bell ringer Quasimodo. Hunchbacked and friendless, he is crowned King of the Fools at a festival where gypsy Esmeralda (Patsy Ruth Miller) is entertaining the crowd as a diversion while her adopted father Clopin (Ernest Torrence) plots to overthrow the aristocracy. Notre Dame archdeacon Dom Claude (Nigel De Brulier) orders Quasimodo to kidnap Esmeralda, but the kidnapping plot fails, and Quasimodo is flogged. Esmeralda brings Quasimodo water, and later, when she is falsely accused of murder, Quasimodo rescues her and takes her to safety in the church. He falls in love with Esmeralda, but their union is not to be, and when he sees Esmeralda with her true love Phoebus (Norman Kerry), Quasimodo takes his own life.

A sergeant (Victor McLaglen) takes over, but the patrol has no knowledge of its location–or even its mission–when they start their trek across the desert. They stumble onto an oasis where they hope to find rest, but snipers begin to pick off the men, and the religious ranting of Sanders (Boris Karloff) fills their ears. Finally, only two men remain alive–Sergeant Morelli (Wallace Ford) and Sanders–and the desperate fight for survival continues. Another John Ford masterpiece with interesting characters.

The donors have all died during the gland transplants, and Julian's endocrinologist Dr. Kurt Van Bruecken (Reinhold Schunzel) is refusing to perform the next operation. Julian rescues medical student Allen Guthrie (Morton Lowry) from a suicide attempt and, later, finds another doctor to use Guthrie as his next donor. Guthrie dies during the operation, and Scotland Yard begins an investigation. Meanwhile, Julian confesses his operations to Eve who marries him anyway, and they take off on an ill-fated honeymoon. The film was remade in 1959 as "The Man Who Could Cheat Death."
