  The year is 1882 when Virgil Cole (Ed Harris) and his long-time buddy Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen) are hired by the town council of the Western mining town of Appaloosa. Their job is to bring to justice cattle baron Randall Bragg (Jeremy Irons) who has shot the sheriff and his deputies when they tried to arrest him. Virgil and Everett are setting out to find witnesses to Bragg's crimes when a piano-playing widow, Allie French (Renee Zellweger), arrives in town with plans of her own for stealing Virgil's heart. Soon, the friendship of Everett and Virgil is tested when both men fall for Allie, but they must unite if they are to achieve their mission of keeping the witnesses alive and sending Bragg to court.
