Oscar (Allan Edwall)and Emilie (Ewa Froling) are successful entertainers, until Oscar dies leaving widowed Emilie to raise their two children, Fanny (Pernilla Allwin) and Alexander (Bertil Guve). Emilie remarries, and she and the children move into the austere home of her new husband, Bishop Vergerus (Jan Malmsjo). Lacking the comforts that Fanny and Alexander had known, the children are very unhappy–until their grandmother (Gunn Wallgren) takes them into her home and showers them with affection. Now, at last, the children find refuge. This film won four Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Film. Ingmar Bergman was also nominated for Best Director.
