  As Father Edward J. Flanagan (Spencer Tracy) strives to set up a community for homeless boys, he runs into trouble with one boy, Whitey Marsh (Mickey Rooney), whose older brother (Edward Norris) is a gangster. Whitey runs away a number of times and finally manages to join his brother's gang. But, Father Flanagan and the boys capture the gang, and Whitey, at last, respects Father Flanagan's program and has hope for the future. Spencer Tracy won an Academy Award as Best Actor for his role in this film (his second consecutive Best Actor Oscar). Nominations were received for Best Picture and Director, and another Oscar was received for Best Original Story.

  A cattle man, Wade Hatton (Errol Flynn), arrives in Dodge City in 1872 and is appointed sheriff. Hatton manages to clean up Dodge City, and, in the process, wins the heart of Abbie Irving (Olivia de Havilland).

If it is, then the marriage may be in jeopardy. Kildare tries to get to the real problem, and the grumpy Dr. Gillespie (Lionel Barrymore) comes up with the diagnosis–an injury from an accident. A simple operation fixes the problem, and the wedding plans continue.
