Flint Lockwood (voice of Bill Hader) has grown up to be an inventor in his tiny island town of Swallow Falls. He succeeds, and now, as cheeseburgers rain down over Swallow Falls, female reporter Sam Sparks (voice of Anna Faris) covers the story. Greed takes over, and the townsfolk go wild as they demand more and more food. Sam, who is now Flint's girlfriend, comes to Flint's aid when he tries to reverse the catastrophe as pancakes, hotdogs, banana splits, Spaghetti Twisters, and meatballs fall from the sky.

Now, Rick is encouraged by scientist Holly Cantrell (Anna Friel), and he finishes building his time-travel device. Fireworks salesman Will Stanton (Danny McBride) leads Rick and Holly to a cave where they test the machine and find themselves in a parallel universe. They lose their time-travel machine, and, with help from their monkey-like guide Chaka (Jorma Taccone), they begin their search through a vast, unknown world where they must contend with dinosaurs, giant mosquitoes, and other creepy creatures in their attempt to find the machine.
