After assassinating Abraham Lincoln, an injured John Wilkes Booth (Bill Gribble) arrived at the farm of Dr. Samuel A. Mudd (Dennis Weaver) where the doctor set his broken leg. As a result, Mudd was falsely accused and sentenced to life in a penal colony for being part of a conspiracy to kill the President. His wife, Frances (Susan Sullivan), maintained his innocence, but it would be many years before President Andrew Jackson pardoned him.
