Twenty years later, Esteban meets Rosa's sister Clara (Meryl Streep), and they marry and have a daughter, Blanca. Later, Clara and Blanca (Winona Ryder) move out in order to get away from the violent Esteban. Esteban, who is now a senator, has his sister Ferula (Glenn Close) banned from his home. Valjean is put in prison for stealing a loaf of bread and 20 years later is released. He finds success and is elected mayor of a town, but Javert arrives on the scene and is suspicious of Valjean. Valjean takes Fantine (Uma Thurman) into his home after she loses her job, but she is tortured by Javert and dies. Valjean raises her daughter Cosette. | | Movie better than musical. | Lenmac 01/22/2013 | | Just saw Les Mis, the musical, with Jackman and Crowe. Would take this movie version over the musical anyday. If you have only seen the musical, you should rent this movie to get a better feel for the actual story and timelines. |
