  Comedian and nightclub bingo caller Eddie Ginley (Albert Finney) dreams of becoming a detective. He is hired by Jacob De Fries (George Silver) and soon finds himself involved in drug and gun smuggling as well as dealing with members of the South African liberation movement.

  Wealthy widow Ellen Wheeler (Elizabeth Taylor) has recently married John (Laurence Harvey), but she is not happy. John tells her that she has imagined the murder, but her friend Sara (Billie Whitelaw) sympathizes with her. Ellen appears to be headed for a mental breakdown. Did she or didn't she see the murder being committed?
