Alan Arkin received an Oscar Nomination as Best Actor, and a nomination also went to Sondra Locke as Best Supporting Actress.

Accepting payoffs from gambling operations and drug rings is an accepted practice for his fellow officers, but Serpico refuses to be part of the "game," and his fellow officers ostracize him. Now, Serpico is frustrated and goes to the editors of the "New York Times." A scandal results, and Serpico testifies in court–all of which results in Serpico becoming the enemy of his fellow officers and the criminal world, as well. Pacino was nominated for the Oscar as Best Actor.
