An upper-class Manhattan couple, Jessie and Brandon Bourne (Barbara Stanwyck and James Mason), have marital problems because of Brandon's roaming eye that leads to his affair with Isobel Lorrison (Ava Gardner). Meanwhile, Jessie goes to a party and meets ex-cop Mark Dwyer (Van Heflin) who she becomes attracted to. When Isobel is murdered, Mark steps in to solve the crime, and both Jessie and Brandon are suspects.
