First, Agnes' alcoholic sister Claire (Kate Reid) stops to visit, and then their daughter Julia (Lee Remick) appears on the scene announcing that she is going through her fourth divorce. As if that was not enough, their best friends Harry and Edna (Joseph Cotten and Betsy Blair) come to visit, and it appears that they plan to stay forever. What has happened to their life of quiet domesticity?

The film received Academy Awards for Best Picture, Actor (Borgnine), Director, and Screenplay. Betsy Blair and Joe Mantell were nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor.
