After being freed, Frank realizes that he cannot be married to a murderess and tells Diane that he is leaving her. Not a good move because Diane now puts the car into reverse, they fall over a cliff, and hurtle to their deaths.

Meanwhile, Lora's 16-year-old daughter Susie (Sandra Dee) feels neglected by her mother as Lora's time is taken up with her career, and Susie falls for photographer Steve Archer (John Gavin). But, when Annie dies, Lora and the daughters realize their mistakes and change their attitudes about life. Both Juanita Moore and Susan Kohner received Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress.

When Jessie's jewels are stolen, Frances steers the police in John's direction, but then the chemistry between Frances and John heats up, and love is definitely in the air. Now, Jessie is so much in love with John that she does not seem to care whether or not John is really a jewel thief.
