Garry Spikes (Lee Marvin) is a veteran gunman who is wounded, and runaway boys–Les Richter (Ron Howard) and Will Young (Gary Grimes)–nurse him back to health. They love hearing Spikes tell about his past adventures, and Spikes encourages them to form an outlaw gang with him as their leader. Les and Will enter the world of bank robberies with Spikes, but then Spikes double-crosses them and hunts them as a bounty hunter. When Will decides to settle the score and get revenge, mayhem is certain to follow.
