In 1951, George (Alan Alda) and Doris (Ellen Burstyn) leave their mates and join each other at an inn in California after which they return to their homes. They continue their trysts every five years until 1977. This story reflects their personal changes over the 25 year period. George sees a psychiatrist, moves to California, and becomes a piano player. Doris' life also changes from a hippie lifestyle to that of a successful businesswoman. Without fail, every five years, they always appear on schedule and help each other through crises of life. Burstyn was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar.
