  Shady spiritualist Alexis (Turhan Bey) attempts to take advantage of wealthy widow Christine Faber (Lynn Bari) by pretending to contact her late husband Paul (Donald Curtis) who had supposedly died in a car accident two years ago. Alexis is in for a big surprise when he performs seances for Christine and her sister Janet (Cathy O'Donnell) and Paul appears and is, in fact, very much alive and involved in a fraudulent scheme.

  Germaine (Merle Oberon) is in love with young composer Paul Verlaine (John Garrick), but he is too busy to notice her. Paul does gain success and turns to stage actress Simone St. Claire (Margot Grahame) who takes him under her wing and marries him. But, the marriage is ill-fated, and John murders Simone's lover and is sent to Devil's Island. He manages to escape, revisits Germaine, and is inspired to write an opera about his experiences.

But the town's mayor has other plans–until Dr. Christian, despite having out-of-date tools, performs a delicate operation on the mayor's daughter.
