  Lon Chaney Jr. plays "Dynamo" Dan McCormick who is a carnival side-show performer using his immunity from absorbing large volts of electricity as his act. After riding on a bus that crashes into an electric pole, Dan is the sole survivor. Dan recuperates at the home of mad scientist Dr. Paul Rigas (Lionel Atwill) where Rigas uses him for experiments and turns Dan into a "man made monster" controlled by Rigas. When Rigas' colleague Dr. John Lawrence (Samuel S. Hinds) wants him to stop the experiment, Rigas orders Dan to kill him. The deed is done, but Dan is arrested and sentenced to the electric chair where he absorbs the electricity and again becomes a superhuman–now ready to seek revenge.

  A famous photographer, Katherine Grant (Claudette Colbert), while photographing a tunnel being constructed under the Hudson River, takes pictures of sandhog Jim Ryan (Fred MacMurray) who is working on the tunnel project. A fight breaks out, and Jim wins. Katherine has taken pictures of the fight, and the pictures appear in a magazine. As a result, Jim is fired. Because she feels responsible, Katherine hires Jim as her assistant, which leads to romance despite great differences in their personalities.

Stone) assisting, Blackie sets out to find the missing diamond. He catches the thugs and, as a bonus, gets an apology from Inspector Farraday.

Grant received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
