Charlie Chan (Peter Ustinov) leaves the comfort of retirement when he is asked to solve a series of San Francisco murders. His bumbling grandson Lee Chan, Jr. (Richard Hatch) wants to be a private eye and tries to help but keeps messing up. Although the situation turns crazy, Lee's fiancee Cordelia (Michelle Pfeiffer) sees nothing wrong with his behavior. Amidst the craziness, Charlie deals with his old nemesis, The Dragon Queen (Angie Dickinson), who he had sent to prison many years ago. She is out of prison and determined to get even with Charlie.
