Finally, war veteran Marcus (Forest Whitaker) fights back by forming the Deacons of Defense and Justice to help protect the people in Black neighborhoods from combative whites. When more KKK members arrive in town, war is sure to follow.

But, on investigation, he finds out that the man was beaten into the confession by the police, and witnesses were beaten into providing the "correct" testimony. Because of this and other similar cases, he is targeted by the police for harassment. The corruption appears to go all the way up to the mayor's office.
