Excellent performances highlight this tension-filled drama about a necrophiliac, John Reginald Christie (Richard Attenborough), who promises women that he will cure their illnesses and then kills them, attacks their bodies, and later buries them in the garden. His next intended victim is Beryl Evans (Judy Geeson) who lives in the upstairs apartment with her husband Timothy (John Hurt). Beryl is pregnant, and, because they cannot afford a baby, John convinces them that he will perform an abortion on Beryl. However, just before performing the abortion, John rapes Beryl and then kills her. Based on the true story about the British mass-murderer who killed many women between 1940 and 1953.

World powers do appear on the scene, and, when matters spin out of control with young King Loris (Ian Bannen) as ruler, the Prime Minister of the island, Amphibulos (Peter Sellers), undermines him and leads a revolution to overthrow the British.
