James Leeds (William Hurt) is a new teacher at a school for the hearing impaired, and Sarah Norman (Marlee Matlin) is a deaf woman who has graduated from the school but has opted to stay and work as a custodian rather than face the world outside. James almost immediately falls in love with Sarah, but she resists his advances. When James meets Sarah's mother (Piper Laurie) she tells him that Sarah was sexually molested as a teenager, and that contributes to her wariness of his attentions. Now, James understands and finds new ways to communicate with Sarah–which leads to the love affair that develops between them. Matlin won the Oscar for Best Actress, and nominations were also received for Best Actor (Hurt), Picture, Supporting Actress (Laurie), and Writing.
