British explorer Capt. Robert Falcon Scott (John Mills) sets out on an expedition in 1910 to the South Pole. Two years later, he reaches it, but, on the way home, he and his crew mysteriously die in the cold. A search party finds their remains–along with Scott's diary providing clues to their unsuccessful attempt to make it back to civilization. The fine score composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams later was transmuted to his "Sinfonia Antarctica."
