  When ex-con Max Cady (Robert Mitchum) is released from an eight-year prison term for rape and assault, he vows to get even with the Georgia lawyer, Sam Bowden (Gregory Peck), who had testified against him. He arrives in town and intends to get revenge by raping Bowden's wife Peggy (Polly Bergen) and daughter Nancy (Lori Martin). Police Chief Dutton (Martin Balsam) tries to help, but his hands are tied. Finally, to escape Cady, Bowden moves Peggy and Nancy to a houseboat on the river–where a showdown awaits.

  Irving Berlin songs are the real draw in this film as Phil and Bob (Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby) come to the aid of their ex-military boss Maj. Gen. Waverly (Dean Jagger) who needs a boost in his struggling winter resort. Accompanied by singing sisters Betty and Judy (Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen), Phil and Bob travel to Vermont and make plans to put on a musical show to raise needed funds for Waverly. Songs include "White Christmas," "Sisters," and "Blue Skies"–and "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep" was nominated for an Oscar for Best Song.
