Rodeo performer Junior Bonner (Steve McQueen) has passed his prime and returns home to Prescott, Arizona, where he finds that his parents, Ace and Elvira (Robert Preston and Ida Lupino), are breaking up their marriage, and his brother Curley (Joe Don Baker) is striking it rich selling off parcels of the family's land. Trying to regain his self-esteem, Junior enters the town's Fourth of July rodeo and wins the bull-riding event. Now, Junior buys an airplane ticket with the winnings and heads to Australia for more rodeos.
