  There are some good moments in this adaptation of James Joyce's masterpiece concerning Leopold and Molly Bloom's (Milo O'Shea and Barbara Jefford) streams of consciousness. The story takes place over a 24-hour period when impotent Leopold meets a young poet, Stephen Dedalus (Maurice Roeves). They visit a brothel, and sit up all night talking. After Stephen leaves, Molly, who is unhappy with Leopold, fantasizes about a possible affair with Stephen. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Screenplay.

Matters worsen when Lilia becomes pregnant and dies in childbirth–leaving the Herriton family (Rupert Graves and Judy Davis) determined to take custody of the baby.
