Devil worshippers in a small town were massacred in 12th-century Italy. A church was built over the gravesites by an alchemist who devised an elaborate scheme to seal off the church in the event the Satanists arose from the now-sealed crypt. The builder was buried alive in the church at the end of construction. Now the church is being restored, and–you guessed it–the demons are unleashed. Will the world be saved by the alchemist's defenses? Excellent photography.

Director Argento comes through with lots of gore again, this time with loud rock music in the background. In fact, the gore may be more than his usual, if that is possible–some is downright revolting. A young opera singer, Betty (Cristina Marsillach) takes over the lead in a Verdi opera after the previous lead was run over by a car, and now a psychopath pursues her.
