  Hlynur (Hilmir Snaer Gudnason) is a loser; he is 30 years old, still lives with his mother, can't hold a job, etc., etc. When his mother goes away to visit relatives, Hlynur enjoys a drunken, one-night stand with Lola (Victoria Abril) who, if course, soon announces she is pregnant but claims that the baby IS NOT Hlynur's. But wait, Hlynur's mother (Hanna Maria Karlsdottir) now announces that she and Lola are in love and will be spending the rest of their lives together. Meanwhile, Hofi (Thrudur Vilhjalmdottir) announces she is pregnant and insists that Hlynur IS the father. Could events possibly be more complicated?

  Insurance agent Abe Holt (Forest Whitaker) is sent from the scene of a bus crash miles away to Hastings, Minnesota, to investigate another crash: a fatal car accident that left only charred remains. If the claim goes through, the beneficiary of a $1,000,000 death benefit is the victim's sister Isold (Julia Stiles) who lives in a run-down cabin with her husband Fred (Jeremy Renner) and son Thor (Vladas Bagdonas). During the investigation, Fred becomes the prime suspect in what Holt has now determined to be a murder case in which the car victim's identity was forged. But, as he gets to know Isold, Holt's professionalism wavers.
