But, they form a friendship and discover a magical forest called Terabithia where they visit their "castle," which is really a tree house. Jesse and Leslie create their own fantasy land where they reign as king and queen, and, in the process, they discover a courage they had not previously known. Based on the "Lonely Hearts Killers" crimes, which were committed in the 1940s, this film shows how New York detectives–Elmer C. Robinson (John Travolta), who was obsessed with the murders, and his partner Charles Hildebrandt (James Gandolfini)–tracked down Ray Fernandez (Jared Leto) and Martha Beck (Salma Hayek). Their scam was to swindle elderly women out of their money and then murder them to destroy any evidence. Fernandez and Beck were finally arrested, confessed to 12 of their murders, and were electrocuted the same day at Sing Sing prison in 1951.

When the drama teacher, Miss Dodger (Patricia Clarkson), offers Phoebe a role in the school production of "Alice in Wonderland," Phoebe is thrilled and accepts the role of "Alice." Rehearsals begin, but problems ensue when Phoebe slips away from reality and sees the play's characters leading her through a magical maze of life, which could lead to her downfall.
