The Pope has died, and, after being summoned by the Vatican, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) travels to Rome where he decodes a symbol found on a murder victim's skin. Clues lead to a resurrected sect, the Illuminatis, that has kidnapped four high-ranking Cardinals who are in line to succeed the Pope. The plan is to kill them one-by-one and then bomb Vatican City to show the power of science over faith. Along the way, Langdon joins forces with Italian scientist Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer), and they search through catacombs and crypts for answers to the villains' identities.
