Railroad engineer Smokey Joe Nolan (J. Farrell MacDonald) is trying to avoid a head-on collision and wrecks his train. This is the third such wreck for the railroad in three weeks, and the wrecks, caused by phantom trains, are the work of a syndicate led by Reynolds (Robert Ellis) who wants to force President Harrington (Hobart Bosworth) to sell his railroad. When the railroad holds an inquiry, Smokey is fired. After meeting Smokey's beautiful daughter Carolyn (Sally Blane), Harrington's son Bruce (William Collier Jr.) volunteers to investigate. He poses as a mechanic, solves the mystery, and rides off on the train with Carolyn for their honeymoon.
