Anna escapes with Karl Marsen (Paul Henreid) and finds her father, but Marsen is a Gestapo plant, and the Nazis capture Axel and Anna and take them back to Germany. British spy Gus Bennett (Rex Harrison) is assigned the duty of retrieving Axel and Anna from the clutches of their captors. Hendrickje becomes pregnant, and they marry, but she dies. However, during the decades covered in the story, Rembrandt paints some of his most creative work.
