Harry reluctantly gives her permission to go to L.A. and arranges for her to stay with Uncle Phil (Richard Masur) who lives with his girlfriend Rose (Christine Ebersole) and her son Nick (Austin O'Brien). Nick and Vada are close in age and, together, travel around L.A. finding information about Vada's mother. When Vada learns that Shelly is about to give birth, she returns home and, while saying goodbye, receives her first kiss–from Nick.
