Abandoned by her mother, 16-year-old Miranda (Evan Rachel Wood) works double shifts at McDonalds in order to support herself. Miranda's father, Charlie (Michael Douglas), suddenly re-enters her life after spending two years in a mental hospital and involves her in his wild plan to uncover hidden gold in their California neighborhood. While institutionalized, Charlie read a diary written by a 17th century Spanish missionary who claimed that doubloons are hidden under what is now the neighborhood Costco. Together, father and daughter go in search of the cache, and, along the way, rekindle their relationship.
